1
00:00:20,590 --> 00:00:21,690
All right.

2
00:00:23,190 --> 00:00:24,810
G, you want to start it off?

3
00:00:25,810 --> 00:00:26,370
Sure.

4
00:00:26,370 --> 00:00:31,090
So, welcome to DEF CON Safe Mode.

5
00:00:31,430 --> 00:00:45,270
So , you know, Badge Life at Blue Team Village this year, a little bit different since we're all kind of separate, but together we thought we'd make Badge Life reflect the extreme social distancing that, you know, we're practicing this year.

6
00:00:45,270 --> 00:00:48,170
So, the thought was, you know, you've probably got a pile of masks sitting around.

7
00:00:48,170 --> 00:00:49,310
Why don't we do something cool with them?

8
00:00:50,810 --> 00:00:54,390
So, we've been putting together a bunch of different examples of stuff.

9
00:00:54,450 --> 00:00:58,430
DeSert's got, it's been building, you know, kind of Mask Level 1.

10
00:00:58,430 --> 00:01:04,470
We have some Mask Level 2 stuff that's pretty cool that we'll be streaming the builds on later this weekend.

11
00:01:05,990 --> 00:01:08,270
You know, then really we just want people to have fun.

12
00:01:08,270 --> 00:01:18,650
You know, if you're into, like, wearable electronics, doing stuff with, like, NeoPixels and, like, voice modulators, you know, really kind of the sky's the limit.

13
00:01:19,270 --> 00:01:22,490
That was, see what cool stuff people can come up with.

14
00:01:24,210 --> 00:01:26,650
Yeah, I guess, go ahead.

15
00:01:26,650 --> 00:01:41,350
Oh, I was just gonna say, I'll be, I'll be showing people on stream tomorrow how to take this mask and put LED sequins, like these little guys, and make the entire thing light up.

16
00:01:41,490 --> 00:01:48,530
And then Saturday, I will be doing more with the NeoPixels, like these.

17
00:01:49,190 --> 00:01:55,290
And I will actually be affixing it to the inside of this mask, along with a microphone , and making it voice activated.

18
00:01:56,150 --> 00:01:56,950
Nice.

19
00:01:57,610 --> 00:02:00,770
I may, I may jump in on some, some build streaming as well.

20
00:02:00,770 --> 00:02:07,350
I was, I wasn't able to build mine due to a, we got hit by the hurricane a bit, so I've been cleaning out my house.

21
00:02:07,410 --> 00:02:12,310
So not, not a lot of time to solder stuff, but I, I got some time carved out over the weekend.

22
00:02:13,050 --> 00:02:20,070
So, so really, you know, going into the weekend, just things to keep in mind.

23
00:02:20,130 --> 00:02:25,270
Anything you do must conform to DEF CON and Blue Team Village acceptable, you know, conduct policy.

24
00:02:25,270 --> 00:02:27,390
Nothing, nothing crazy in there.

25
00:02:27,390 --> 00:02:28,630
Stay safe.

26
00:02:28,810 --> 00:02:33,650
Don't, don't do anything that's going to asphyxiate you, electrocute you, or otherwise harm yourself.

27
00:02:33,770 --> 00:02:37,650
Just be careful, especially if you're, you're selling around, you know, lithium batteries.

28
00:02:37,650 --> 00:02:42,130
I think, I think when we were prototyping stuff, we might've had a mishap.

29
00:02:42,130 --> 00:02:43,990
Don't, don't burn your face.

30
00:02:44,510 --> 00:02:44,990
Yeah.

31
00:02:45,450 --> 00:02:45,850
Yeah.

32
00:02:45,850 --> 00:02:49,010
You want to, you want to be careful when you're messing around with the lithium batteries.

33
00:02:49,310 --> 00:02:52,450
I got myself pretty good when I was prototyping.

34
00:02:52,790 --> 00:02:53,310
Yep.

35
00:02:53,310 --> 00:02:58,650
We, we've been tweeting out, there, there's a kind of an FAQ that has kind of full contest details.

36
00:02:58,650 --> 00:02:59,850
We won't read them verbatim.

37
00:02:59,850 --> 00:03:04,530
We'll send that out again right after this, just so that's more easily accessible.

38
00:03:05,630 --> 00:03:09,230
Really, you know, sky's the limit, you know, you don't have to make your mess from scratch.

39
00:03:09,550 --> 00:03:11,570
You can, you can customize a pre-made one.

40
00:03:11,570 --> 00:03:13,030
It's really whatever you want to do with it.

41
00:03:13,030 --> 00:03:17,790
You can incorporate whatever artwork or, you know, iconography that you want to.

42
00:03:19,490 --> 00:03:22,210
And they don't necessarily have to have the electronics either.

43
00:03:22,210 --> 00:03:27,950
You know, they could just do really cool artwork to showcase whatever your creation is.

44
00:03:28,630 --> 00:03:28,890
Yeah.

45
00:03:28,910 --> 00:03:37,890
Or, you know, if you want to, you know, if you want to design up in 3d print a, like kind of a whole, you know, like a whole kind of like crazy helmet or something, you can do that too.

46
00:03:37,890 --> 00:03:39,930
It's, it's non-prescriptive really.

47
00:03:40,690 --> 00:03:46,250
At the end of all of it, the, we have some contest categories that will, again, they're in the, they're in the FAQ.

48
00:03:47,450 --> 00:03:48,890
There's a whole bunch of different ones.

49
00:03:48,890 --> 00:03:54,290
And, you know, whenever we go through judging, we'll announce winners on Sunday.

50
00:03:55,030 --> 00:04:07,350
Really the idea is, you know, have fun with it and we'll have some swag for folks who, you know, so if you're, if you're submitting, there's a, there's a Twitter hashtag that you can tag us with.

51
00:04:07,350 --> 00:04:08,430
It's in the FAQ.

52
00:04:09,230 --> 00:04:12,070
That's just hashtag BTVMaskCon.

53
00:04:13,730 --> 00:04:18,090
And I guess just be prepared to, you know, if you want swag, we'll need a mailing address to send it to.

54
00:04:18,090 --> 00:04:18,990
Don't care if it's yours.

55
00:04:18,990 --> 00:04:20,130
Don't care if it's your neighbor's.

56
00:04:20,130 --> 00:04:22,830
Don't care if it's a dead drop somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

57
00:04:22,890 --> 00:04:25,350
Just give us, you know, a postal address where you can pick it up.

58
00:04:25,350 --> 00:04:25,930
That's all.

59
00:04:30,550 --> 00:04:32,310
That's, that's really it.

60
00:04:32,690 --> 00:04:36,010
Like I said, Adisa, do you have any, anything else you wanted to include people in on?

61
00:04:36,670 --> 00:04:39,070
Let me check something here.

62
00:04:39,070 --> 00:04:44,690
Well, we could talk probably about some of the, the categories as well, you know, just to give like a brief overview of what we have.

63
00:04:45,170 --> 00:04:49,150
I've actually got the FAQ up, so I can just go ahead and read those off.

64
00:04:50,170 --> 00:04:55,930
We're going to have, right now we have nine categories, possibly might add more.

65
00:04:56,070 --> 00:04:59,910
But right now we have the BTV Organizers Arbitrary Choice.

66
00:04:59,970 --> 00:05:03,350
So it's, as a group, we will decide which one we like the most.

67
00:05:03,350 --> 00:05:04,990
That will be a contest winner.

68
00:05:04,990 --> 00:05:08,530
We're going to have Community Choice Individual and Community Choice Family.

69
00:05:08,970 --> 00:05:14,510
So what we mean by that is, you know, with us all being at home, we thought, well, G actually had this idea.

70
00:05:14,510 --> 00:05:17,690
He thought it'd be cool if people got their kids involved.

71
00:05:17,690 --> 00:05:20,750
So, you know, get your families involved, build stuff with the kids.

72
00:05:20,750 --> 00:05:22,070
You know, this is pretty easy.

73
00:05:22,070 --> 00:05:23,550
It doesn't require a ton of skill.

74
00:05:23,550 --> 00:05:24,350
You'll see tomorrow.

75
00:05:24,350 --> 00:05:27,110
I am a awful seamstress.

76
00:05:27,110 --> 00:05:28,130
I'm terrible.

77
00:05:28,130 --> 00:05:29,610
I'm very bad.

78
00:05:29,730 --> 00:05:31,730
And I can make a functional mask.

79
00:05:31,730 --> 00:05:34,270
So, you know, it's, it's not terribly difficult.

80
00:05:34,270 --> 00:05:38,850
Get your kids together, show them how to make something fun, and tag us in it.

81
00:05:38,850 --> 00:05:39,910
Let us see it.

82
00:05:40,010 --> 00:05:42,550
So the Community Choice will be ones that y'all pick.

83
00:05:42,550 --> 00:05:46,150
And then we also have a Most Cohesive Family Effort.

84
00:05:46,270 --> 00:05:54,270
So something that, you know, the whole family gets together, even if the kids are gluing like macaroni to the mask and painting it all up all cool.

85
00:05:54,270 --> 00:05:55,550
We'd like to see it.

86
00:05:56,050 --> 00:05:59,890
So it's the mask equivalent of, you know, wearing your matching t-shirts.

87
00:05:59,890 --> 00:06:01,110
Yes, exactly.

88
00:06:02,250 --> 00:06:06,570
And then we also have the Most Elaborate Incorporation of Electronics.

89
00:06:06,750 --> 00:06:15,110
So, you know, somebody builds like a, somebody comes in like a full helmet, a la Daft Punk, probably stand a pretty good chance if you built that.

90
00:06:15,850 --> 00:06:22,450
We'll have the Most Elaborate Non-Electronic Wearable Mask, which will also be BTV chosen, which will be very cool.

91
00:06:22,850 --> 00:06:27,930
And the Most Elaborate Incorporation of Theme Work and Artwork.

92
00:06:28,210 --> 00:06:33,310
I'm excited for that one, because I love seeing people's cool art, because I have zero artistic skill myself.

93
00:06:33,850 --> 00:06:38,390
Then we also have, subjectively, the Best Couples Effort and the Best Kids Effort.

94
00:06:38,390 --> 00:06:43,010
So, you know, get your kids in there, let them build their own thing, and they might win some cool swag.

95
00:06:44,510 --> 00:06:48,010
And I think that's all the contest categories we have so far.

96
00:06:49,130 --> 00:06:49,950
Yep.

97
00:06:50,730 --> 00:07:03,610
We also have some example masks that you can, if you want to kind of build yourself, we have some example ones out there that aren't affiliated with any of the makers that have put those out there, but they're patterns that we know to actually work.

98
00:07:03,850 --> 00:07:05,390
So they're a starting point.

99
00:07:05,390 --> 00:07:14,750
We also linked some basic electronics tutorials, if you want to take a spin through those before he starts streaming the build process tomorrow.

100
00:07:20,090 --> 00:07:23,690
And like I said before, this does require zero skill.

101
00:07:23,690 --> 00:07:32,070
I'm terrible at sewing, and I managed to take this mask and some thread and make a functional light-up mask.

102
00:07:32,070 --> 00:07:34,530
So if I can do it, you can definitely do it.

103
00:07:34,550 --> 00:07:42,430
I'm god-awful at this, and I've never even thought of trying to do something like this before, but we had to adapt to the environment that we were given.

104
00:07:43,270 --> 00:07:44,230
Yep.

105
00:07:44,690 --> 00:07:46,810
That's the theme for 2020, really.

106
00:07:49,550 --> 00:07:50,230
Cool.

107
00:07:50,230 --> 00:07:53,430
I think that's all we got.

108
00:07:54,170 --> 00:08:01,050
Yeah, if you have any questions, I think we have a MaskCon channel in the Discord that you can drop questions in.

109
00:08:01,050 --> 00:08:02,650
We'll try to lurk in there.

110
00:08:02,730 --> 00:08:06,790
Feel free to tag either one of us if you have questions that are kind of more burning.

111
00:08:08,810 --> 00:08:11,190
We're trying to pay attention to a bunch of other stuff as well.

112
00:08:11,190 --> 00:08:11,930
Feel free to tag us.

113
00:08:11,930 --> 00:08:14,830
We'll drop in and happy to answer any questions or help.

114
00:08:15,290 --> 00:08:16,730
Yeah, I'll be in there all night.

115
00:08:16,830 --> 00:08:20,310
I don't have much going on, so I'll be on the Discord most of the evening.

116
00:08:20,310 --> 00:08:22,450
So if you have any questions, just go ahead and tag me.

117
00:08:22,650 --> 00:08:24,870
I'll be happy to answer anything I can.

118
00:08:25,890 --> 00:08:26,850
Great.

119
00:08:34,030 --> 00:08:34,590
Great.

120
00:08:34,590 --> 00:08:35,110
Take care.
