1
00:00:00,720 --> 00:00:02,680
Hi, I'm Will Roper.

2
00:00:02,700 --> 00:00:04,320
And I'm Brett Goldstein.

3
00:00:04,320 --> 00:00:09,960
And welcome to HackASAT, DEFCON's first live satellite hacking event.

4
00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:11,840
Do you need some hand sanitizer, Will?

5
00:00:11,840 --> 00:00:13,120
I do, Brett.

6
00:00:13,120 --> 00:00:14,180
Okay, here you go.

7
00:00:14,180 --> 00:00:14,820
Thank you.

8
00:00:14,820 --> 00:00:20,860
Okay, there's a pandemic going, but we're actually really looking forward to being part of safe mode.

9
00:00:20,860 --> 00:00:21,840
But guess what?

10
00:00:21,840 --> 00:00:26,880
I run a SWAT team of nerds, and I've brought my best to DEFCON.

11
00:00:26,880 --> 00:00:34,380
We're representing all of the Air Force and Space Force's programs, and a lot of them are satellites overhead in space.

12
00:00:34,400 --> 00:00:48,280
And with space being increasingly important to how we operate in the military and to how all of us live our personal lives, we wanted to see if hackers could get in to a satellite orbiting overhead at seven kilometers a second.

13
00:00:48,280 --> 00:00:52,240
Will and I are done with the days of security through obscurity.

14
00:00:52,240 --> 00:00:55,140
We want you to take a look at what we've done.

15
00:00:55,140 --> 00:01:00,280
We think it's pretty good, but bring your best because we're going to show you some pretty cool stuff.

16
00:01:00,400 --> 00:01:01,300
Absolutely.

17
00:01:01,300 --> 00:01:12,060
We are getting out from behind our high fence lines to learn from communities like yours how to be better at cyber hygiene so it's not the easy way to take our military down.

18
00:01:12,160 --> 00:01:22,400
With our satellites being so important to the way our military operates, why fight a fighter or a ship or soldiers on the ground if you can take out the satellites that enable them?

19
00:01:22,400 --> 00:01:25,520
And what easier way to do that than cyber?

20
00:01:25,520 --> 00:01:29,360
It's the quicker, easier, and more seductive way to beat us.

21
00:01:29,360 --> 00:01:34,620
And we've got to defeat this dark side of the force if we're going to be a military that people can count on.

22
00:01:34,620 --> 00:01:38,880
So if you've got your game on, bring your Emacs, bring your VI.

23
00:01:38,880 --> 00:01:45,120
I'm an Emacs guy, but let's see what you've got and let's have a great DEF CON together.

24
00:01:45,160 --> 00:01:45,920
Absolutely.

25
00:01:45,920 --> 00:01:47,780
We started with a fighter.

26
00:01:47,780 --> 00:01:49,820
We've now moved to a satellite.

27
00:01:49,860 --> 00:01:54,120
And in future, we want to bring more opportunities for the community to learn.

28
00:01:54,120 --> 00:01:59,760
So share us your thoughts as what exciting opportunity can we come back with next year?

29
00:01:59,760 --> 00:02:05,060
And me with my Air and Space Force program and Brett with his SWAT team of nerds will be here.

30
00:02:05,060 --> 00:02:06,300
Look forward to seeing you.
