1 00:00:02,950 --> 00:00:05,130 Welcome to DIY Bypass Tools. 2 00:00:05,190 --> 00:00:12,890 My name is Robert Graydon and I'm one of the organizers here at the LBV, and today we're going to be showing you how to make bypass tools at home. 3 00:00:16,620 --> 00:00:26,420 So a lot of you may be wondering, aside from being mid-pandemic and having to do all of this from home, what other reasons would there be for us to be making our tools DIY? 4 00:00:26,860 --> 00:00:32,060 The most obvious, of course, is that these are specialized tools, and most of them aren't even in production. 5 00:00:32,060 --> 00:00:35,640 So if you want to get it at all, you need to be the one making it. 6 00:00:35,640 --> 00:00:48,240 Aside from that, when pen testing, it wouldn't be a fantastic look at a lot of sites to be the guy walking in with a duffel bag stuffed full of various tools and wire and rope and all of that. 7 00:00:48,240 --> 00:00:56,500 So it's handy to be able to know how to look around in your situation and find materials to make the tool that you need when on site. 8 00:00:58,020 --> 00:01:01,400 Today we'll be showing you how to make five different types of tools. 9 00:01:01,500 --> 00:01:12,380 The latch poker, or puller, the under the door tool, the beside the door tool, padlock shims, and the latch knife. 10 00:01:13,580 --> 00:01:17,500 First off, we'll be teaching you how to make the latch poker, or puller. 11 00:01:18,200 --> 00:01:23,580 The materials required for this is a single coat hanger, or a piece of wire. 12 00:01:23,600 --> 00:01:25,600 You will also need a pair of pliers. 13 00:01:28,710 --> 00:01:33,010 Welcome to the Lock Bypass Village's tools making presentation. 14 00:01:33,150 --> 00:01:48,170 So in this presentation, we're going to be going through a few different tools that you may have seen already in Bypass 101, which is another another talk that we'll be running multiple times throughout the duration of DEF CON. 15 00:01:48,170 --> 00:01:51,570 And if you haven't already been to that, I highly recommend checking it out. 16 00:01:51,690 --> 00:02:00,930 It's somewhat of a prerequisite to this presentation, just because we won't be we won't be teaching you how to use these tools so much in this video, but just how to make them. 17 00:02:01,990 --> 00:02:06,110 So to begin, we're going with a pretty simple one. 18 00:02:06,670 --> 00:02:20,690 Some call it a latch poker, but its essential purpose is when the latch of a door is visible to you from from the locked side, it's basically a tool to just go in and push that out of the way. 19 00:02:21,390 --> 00:02:24,150 So this one's incredibly simple. 20 00:02:24,150 --> 00:02:26,830 All we need is just a piece of wire, really. 21 00:02:27,850 --> 00:02:31,710 It should be somewhat thick because it does need to be fairly rigid. 22 00:02:31,990 --> 00:02:35,130 But coat hanger wire works perfectly for this purpose. 23 00:02:35,150 --> 00:02:37,130 And we'll need a pair of pliers. 24 00:02:38,490 --> 00:02:53,910 So to begin with, we're going to take our pliers and we're going to bend the tip and we're going to take about a centimeter and a half at the front of this and bend that over at 90 degrees. 25 00:02:53,910 --> 00:02:57,810 And so then we have our sort of hook there. 26 00:02:57,950 --> 00:03:06,270 And then we're going to go about four inches back from that and cut off the rest of our wire. 27 00:03:06,810 --> 00:03:16,670 And at that point, what I like to do is put a little bit of an eyelet 28 00:03:20,850 --> 00:03:24,310 onto your poker here. 29 00:03:25,870 --> 00:03:37,630 And so once we have that there and we have a bit of a a hole at the end of it, you can just thread this onto a key ring and that works as the handle. 30 00:03:37,630 --> 00:03:43,270 And how this functions is it just reaches in and you can use it to push a latch out of the way. 31 00:03:43,650 --> 00:03:47,090 And so that is how to make a latch poker. 32 00:03:47,650 --> 00:03:50,130 Next, we'll be making the under the door tool. 33 00:03:50,650 --> 00:03:55,350 The materials required are a coat hanger and a piece of string. 34 00:03:55,510 --> 00:03:57,670 You will also need a pair of pliers. 35 00:04:00,810 --> 00:04:04,010 So in this video, we're going to be making the under the door tool. 36 00:04:04,530 --> 00:04:22,410 It's very similar in purpose to the beside the door tool , which we'll be making later in this presentation, with the key difference being that although both of them are trying to pull down on the handle on the other side of a door, the beside the door tool requires a certain amount of clearance. 37 00:04:22,410 --> 00:04:35,310 So if we have the door frame and we have the door, the gap between those two has to be great enough that the tool is actually able to pass through and sort of slide up that gap, otherwise it won't work. 38 00:04:35,370 --> 00:04:46,210 And if that isn't possible, if we only have enough of a gap just underneath the door, not beside it for our tool to go in, then we'll be having to use the under the door tool. 39 00:04:46,210 --> 00:04:50,830 So that's why we have these two different versions that accomplish the same thing. 40 00:04:50,830 --> 00:05:07,630 So to begin with, the materials that we have is we'll be needing a coat hanger, we'll need string, and if it's possible, try to get some sort of string that is somewhat abrasion resistant, just because we're going to be pulling it underneath that bottom edge of the door when we're using this tool. 41 00:05:07,670 --> 00:05:14,550 And so if it's something that's too thin or easy to cut, then it might just get actually snapped when we're using it to pull. 42 00:05:15,070 --> 00:05:17,830 And then for tools, all we need is just a pair of pliers. 43 00:05:18,050 --> 00:05:26,150 So to begin with, we're going to be taking our coat hanger and turning it into a long piece of wire, essentially, to build our tool out of. 44 00:05:26,150 --> 00:05:43,350 So how we open it up is with this twisted area on the neck here, we just take our pliers and we're just going to firmly grasp the top there and then we can just twist this by hand and that will unwrap that top portion. 45 00:05:43,530 --> 00:05:53,850 So now we're going to be straightening this out by hand just to get a straight piece to begin with. 46 00:05:55,570 --> 00:06:02,210 And so this only takes just a few seconds here. 47 00:06:03,530 --> 00:06:11,670 And some might find it helpful to use pliers for this step just because it's kind of hard to to grip the thin wire and bend it sometimes. 48 00:06:12,010 --> 00:06:28,730 So once we have our straight piece of wire here, so this has all been straightened out, what we want to do first is we're going to create a kind of loop at the end for our rope to attach to or our string. 49 00:06:28,730 --> 00:06:34,690 So we're going to take our pliers and we're just twisting that over. 50 00:06:36,470 --> 00:06:39,010 And so now we have this little eyelet here. 51 00:06:39,730 --> 00:06:55,990 And next what we are going to be doing is we're going to create a bend in it and we want to create a kind of hook here that'll go over the door handle. 52 00:06:55,990 --> 00:07:01,450 So this is the shape that we're looking for on this side of it. 53 00:07:02,010 --> 00:07:04,990 And at this point we can take our string here. 54 00:07:06,950 --> 00:07:10,630 And we will just tie that on. 55 00:07:13,520 --> 00:07:22,260 And so now what we want to do is, now this varies depending on the height that the handle is on the door that you're actually facing. 56 00:07:23,060 --> 00:07:32,980 So in some cases you may need to find a longer piece of wire or you can also, if you get two coat hangers, twist them together to get enough length. 57 00:07:32,980 --> 00:07:39,620 In this case we're just going to be making a small scale one that would work on the demonstration doors that we've been using throughout. 58 00:07:40,200 --> 00:07:47,360 So we're just going to go down and imagine if our handle is here and say this is where the bottom of our door is. 59 00:07:48,180 --> 00:07:53,880 Then we're going to make a bend there at 90 degrees. 60 00:07:54,680 --> 00:08:03,400 And we can just kind of make a little bit of a bend and then we have our hook here as a bit of a handle. 61 00:08:03,880 --> 00:08:12,520 And so at that point our under the door tool is complete. 62 00:08:13,740 --> 00:08:16,320 We'll now be making the beside the door tool. 63 00:08:16,880 --> 00:08:21,220 The materials required is a coat hanger and we will need a pair of pliers. 64 00:08:24,200 --> 00:08:27,940 So we're going to be making the beside the door tool in this video. 65 00:08:28,060 --> 00:08:33,060 So all that we need in terms of materials is just a regular wire coat hanger. 66 00:08:33,920 --> 00:08:41,060 Some coat hangers that are made out of wire, you'll find that they have a sort of plastic or rubbery outer sheathing on them. 67 00:08:41,540 --> 00:08:56,260 And while those will work sometimes, they're not ideal because they're thicker so they get stuck and the plastic actually inhibits almost how strong they can be just because it means that the wire inside is going to be a lot thinner. 68 00:08:57,000 --> 00:09:01,800 So you want to try to find one that's just wire itself, not with any coating. 69 00:09:01,940 --> 00:09:10,960 And so to begin with we're going to just unravel the twisted top here and that's going to let us open up the coat hanger. 70 00:09:10,960 --> 00:09:13,380 And the easiest way to do this is just with your pliers. 71 00:09:13,380 --> 00:09:16,820 You just grab at the top and then rotate the whole coat hanger. 72 00:09:17,000 --> 00:09:20,360 And so now we have our opened up coat hanger here. 73 00:09:20,360 --> 00:09:27,080 So just by hand we are going to straighten out the wire here. 74 00:09:29,750 --> 00:09:37,990 And this just gives us a nice starting place in terms of actually creating our tool. 75 00:09:40,090 --> 00:09:43,550 And so we have a fairly straight wire here now. 76 00:09:43,610 --> 00:09:51,290 So the part that's actually going to be reaching out to the handle on the other side of the door is what we're going to be creating first. 77 00:09:51,290 --> 00:09:59,870 So we're going to take our wire and we're going to bend it with about an inch and a half or two inches like so. 78 00:10:00,230 --> 00:10:11,810 We're going to be adding another bend like that and so that creates our hook that will actually be going onto the handle on the other side of the door. 79 00:10:11,810 --> 00:10:22,830 So now while keeping this flat we're going to be coming down about a foot and a half and we're going to be bending a 90 degree angle in there. 80 00:10:22,830 --> 00:10:25,690 So it's looking like this. 81 00:10:26,030 --> 00:10:35,990 And then what we're going to be doing next is about the thickness of the door is how much you want your piece of wire here to be. 82 00:10:35,990 --> 00:10:41,010 And so after that thickness you want to put another 90 that brings the wire coming up like this. 83 00:10:45,040 --> 00:10:51,920 And so now we have this basic shape and so this can go around the side of the door. 84 00:10:51,920 --> 00:10:55,800 And then we're going to come up to here and we're going to look where is our hook. 85 00:10:55,800 --> 00:11:02,400 So we have the hook that's on the handle here so what we're going to do is mirror that on the other side just by bending this over. 86 00:11:02,400 --> 00:11:20,180 And the purpose of that is that just gives you an indicator so when you are using this tool you can look at where this is on your side of the door and you can because they're bent symmetrically you can see that the the hook is in that same place on the other side of the door so you know where it is relative to the handle. 87 00:11:21,480 --> 00:11:40,700 Okay so just to quickly demonstrate the sort of symmetrical idea of this tool so here we have a small example door and you can see that it's a lot shorter than a real one so the tool that we've made here it's kind of built for a full-size one so it isn't going to quite actually be usable on this tiny example here. 88 00:11:40,980 --> 00:11:51,640 But the basic idea with this is that you would put it underneath the door and then sort of jimmy it up until you have this piece here between the actual door and the frame. 89 00:11:51,640 --> 00:12:07,420 And so at this point just from looking on this side we can see where our little bend is here and we can see okay well that's right next to the the handle here and what that means is that because it was bent symmetrically we know that that's actually where it is on the other side as well. 90 00:12:09,000 --> 00:12:15,040 And so that's that's how we make this tool and also how we use that symmetrical trick on it. 91 00:12:18,260 --> 00:12:20,720 Next we will be making padlock shims. 92 00:12:21,200 --> 00:12:26,160 The materials required is a soda can and you will also need a pair of scissors. 93 00:12:28,020 --> 00:12:30,800 So now I'll be showing you how to make padlock shims. 94 00:12:30,820 --> 00:12:40,000 These are a very simple thing to do at home you just need a soda can that's empty and you probably want to wash it out beforehand just so you don't make a mess as well as a pair of scissors and that's it. 95 00:12:40,100 --> 00:12:48,840 So to begin with what we want to do is basically get this flat wall of it out into a rectangular sheet so that we can more easily work with it. 96 00:12:48,840 --> 00:12:55,300 So to do that we're just going to cut the bottom off of it cut 97 00:12:58,780 --> 00:12:59,920 the top off of it 98 00:13:05,220 --> 00:13:31,100 and these edges are very sharp so be careful that you don't cut yourself and then we'll cut right down the middle and we can open it up and we get this flat sheet of very thin aluminum so you can kind of flatten it a little bit that just makes it easier to work with. 99 00:13:31,700 --> 00:13:51,300 And so next what we want to do is actually cut out our shim so the basic shape that it's going to be is it kind of has a curve downwards and that's the actual shim part and we're going to leave about a centimeter strip on top of it so that we can fold that over to create a handle that we won't cut ourselves on. 100 00:13:51,340 --> 00:14:08,440 So we'll be starting this off by just cutting that curved piece down there and that's the part that's actually going to go down into the padlock and push the latch out of the way there. 101 00:14:08,720 --> 00:14:11,940 And then again here we're cutting about a centimeter wide strip 102 00:14:17,500 --> 00:14:42,360 and so that leaves us with this basic shape for our shim and all that's left to do now is we take this strip that we made here and we want to fold that in half and what that does is first of all it gives us a rounded edge so we aren't going to actually cut ourselves on that because the the edges of these pieces are extremely sharp and also it just adds a bit of structural rigidity to 103 00:15:07,570 --> 00:15:11,330 Finally, we'll be making the latch knife. 104 00:15:11,730 --> 00:15:15,090 The materials required for this is pallet strapping. 105 00:15:15,330 --> 00:15:25,250 This is commonly seen in warehouses where it's used to secure large loads onto pallets, and is something that's recycled after use so very easy to find. 106 00:15:25,550 --> 00:15:30,810 You will also need a pair of tin snips, and a pair of pliers. 107 00:15:34,340 --> 00:15:37,860 Okay, so we're going to be making a latch knife in this video. 108 00:15:37,860 --> 00:15:44,800 So, what we need for this in terms of materials is a piece of pallet strapping, so this is a very common thing to see in warehouses. 109 00:15:44,800 --> 00:15:51,200 It's essentially a very thin piece of steel, and it's used to hold down materials on pallets. 110 00:15:51,860 --> 00:15:56,300 But because of how common it is, it's also very helpful for us if we're trying to DIY this. 111 00:15:56,320 --> 00:16:05,480 In terms of tools, scissors aren't quite going to cut it for this material, so we will be needing a pair of tin snips, and we'll be needing some pliers. 112 00:16:06,080 --> 00:16:09,600 So, the actual creation of this tool is fairly simple. 113 00:16:09,680 --> 00:16:22,060 First of all, we're going to want to cut a kind of knife point onto this, and what that lets us do is push this in and actually get it behind that latch to begin pushing it out of the way. 114 00:16:22,660 --> 00:16:33,220 So, now we're just going to cut that knife point onto our piece of material here. 115 00:16:35,520 --> 00:16:37,840 And so now we have that there. 116 00:16:38,860 --> 00:16:44,420 And if you wanted to, you would maybe straighten it out a little bit if it got bent while cutting. 117 00:16:44,960 --> 00:16:49,400 And then, so what's left to do is we're actually going to have to put a handle on this. 118 00:16:49,400 --> 00:16:57,720 So you want to look at your point here, and if we know that the latch is going to be on this side, we want to go in behind it. 119 00:16:57,720 --> 00:17:03,800 We want our handle to be facing outwards from the door, because how this tool works is it goes in between the door and the frame. 120 00:17:03,840 --> 00:17:08,280 So we're going to take our tool here, and we're going to just start the bend by hand. 121 00:17:12,300 --> 00:17:15,540 And so you can see that we have the start of a handle formed here. 122 00:17:15,540 --> 00:17:21,100 And now is when we need those pliers, because this is a fairly strong material. 123 00:17:21,100 --> 00:17:34,820 So the pliers are just going to let us take this and squish it down so that it's thin enough to actually go in there. 124 00:17:35,480 --> 00:17:40,400 And the hammer also would help out with this, if you do have that, but we can get it done with the pliers. 125 00:17:40,760 --> 00:17:45,760 And so that's how we make the, uh, the knife latch, or the latch knife. 126 00:17:46,720 --> 00:17:47,880 Thanks for coming out. 127 00:17:47,880 --> 00:17:51,620 You can ask us questions on Discord, or if you want, you can message them to us. 128 00:17:51,620 --> 00:17:57,540 If you haven't already, I'd highly recommend checking out Bypass 101, as well as some of the other talks that we'll be running. 129 00:17:58,020 --> 00:17:59,360 Enjoy the rest of DEF CON!
