3270	9150	Okay, well, welcome everybody to DEFCON 30, the DEFCON Group's VR Village.
9410	12730	We're really happy that you're here. We're excited. We're going to be having some talks.
12730	16510	People have asked if these are actual regular DEFCON talks, and yes, they are.
16510	18370	They're only going to be appearing here.
18390	22610	We are streaming live to Twitch, so try to keep the conversations PG.
23230	27210	The conversations will be picked up by this fellow here on the right of the...
27210	31210	if you're into bleachers, he's on the right-hand side of the bleachers with the red shirt hovering.
31210	38050	That's a bot who actually sees the slides and listens to the speakers and streams it to Twitch.
38050	43870	So if you're in any place else in the event area, you won't be picked up by that microphone,
43870	45630	only when you're standing next to them.
45750	48430	So we'd like to thank you for all being here.
48430	52570	We're really excited because we've got people from all over the planet here at the moment.
53310	58170	So our first speaker is Jason Street.
58170	62490	Hold on a second. I need my bio.
66820	71140	Oh, man, it's... hold on a second.
72640	77540	Unfortunately, it grabbed my keyboard and wouldn't let me switch apps. There we go.
78080	78960	Okay.
81300	88080	So Jason Street is a hacker, author, speaker, and scientific hooligan.
88300	94520	You can find him at Defcon Groups and at Hack Not Crime.
94520	98240	And he's an ambassador for learning and always hoping to teach.
98240	99980	So he's on the Defcon board.
99980	103440	We'd like to thank Jason here today, who's going to give us our keynote speech.
103440	105140	So take it away, Jason.
108960	110980	Hello. How's it going, everyone?
111280	112200	It's going all right.
112760	118480	Okay. I'd like to start off with thanking everyone for being here.
118480	121980	It's like this is like one of our first main beta tests.
121980	124980	And of course, we just rushed it to production because YOLO.
125040	127460	That's awesome. I think it's going to be great.
127460	130440	We did this at Defcon 28.
139620	147120	Hopefully eventually to some point monthly so we can keep this global village going year round.
147120	154660	It's like also over here with the wonderful guy with the nice cool hat with looks like goggles.
154660	160080	That with the blue hoodie and white bottom right there in the front row.
160080	166300	He is actually going to be he is at Defcon right now in the contest area.
166300	172500	And we will be broadcasting in the contest area live for Defcon.
172500	180920	And we're going to allow people that are visiting Defcon to control this bot.
180920	187980	It's like to go around and actually just see the Defcon groups village in VR while they're actually at Defcon.
187980	193720	So it's sort of like a connection that we can have in the VR and Defcon at the same time.
193720	196880	So I want to just got that out of the way.
197680	206980	I do not have a prepared speech because that would require adulting and being a professional.
207240	209160	So sorry about that.
209500	217680	But I do have some things I was like, if I've got time to talk to Defcon group people around the world, what would I say?
217760	220180	And so I want to say a couple of things.
220180	224500	It's like I want to start off with like the heavy stuff and then go off with like the light stuff.
224500	227820	But, you know, when Jason always goes off on a rant, there's always heavy stuff.
227820	230320	So I apologize in advance for that.
230840	240260	But the one thing I do want to start off with is there is a Defcon groups area online, not just in VR,
240260	248680	where you can go to Defcongroups.org, which will then take you to the forum group for Defcon.
248680	251760	So look for a Defcon group in your area.
253160	258520	Look for and see if there's a local group in your area and see that.
258820	262880	And then also go and look at some of the other groups.
262880	266580	It's like try to be interactive, try to connect different groups.
266580	269380	It's like see what y'all can do, what side projects do.
269380	275140	That's the whole reason why the forum is there is to connect hackers from all over the world.
275140	279880	So hopefully that will happen and you'll be able to do that.
279940	288320	Also understand setting up a Defcon groups can be easy and difficult at the same time.
288320	297020	It's extremely easy to get one, but to do it properly is the other key that sometimes we seem to lose.
297020	301840	So always remember when you're starting Defcon groups that you're doing a DCG.
301920	304980	You are not Defcon your city.
306040	312480	A Defcon group is part of Defcon, but it's not like its own Defcon thing.
312480	316040	It is part of Defcon, so it's a Defcon groups.
316040	322840	So make sure you do set that up and you stake that in your group, your DCG group designation.
322840	329980	You're actually putting the title DCG or Defcon groups and the number that's assigned to you.
330060	335380	So and trust me, just to get this out of the way, 1337.
335760	340780	No, sorry, DCG 42.
341220	343080	Nope, not going to happen.
343080	347200	It's like and there's also another DCG 420.
347200	350260	I don't think so, but it's like possibly.
350260	355240	But I'm just telling you a lot of the DCGs, they try to go with like a prime number.
355240	366340	They try to go with a it's going to be based off your area code from the old, you know, BBS's, Telefreak, you know, it's like, you know, the old old days.
366380	370540	And that's where it's based off of the area code of the city or area that you're in.
370640	375520	And yes, there can be more than one Defcon group in an area.
375520	379420	It'll just be the DCG, the number and then a dash A.
379560	384720	And then if there's more than one, because there are some cities that have over 20 million people.
385000	394420	And so, yeah, there can be a DCG dash A or dash B to make sure everybody is represented and everybody has a chance.
394500	403740	And these Defcon groups are to meet and promote the Defcon hacking spirit where it's like we're sharing information.
403740	410180	We're trying to be educational. We're trying to have a positive impact on our communities and our local hackers.
410180	415640	It's like Defcon does it globally. We try to do it, you know, locally.
415660	420100	So we're trying to affect that change locally. So try to actually get that.
420100	428220	It's like when you're trying to be at a Defcon group, you're trying to connect with your local hackers in that area before Defcon comes back around.
428220	435400	But at the same time, that means the same COC, the same rules apply as it would at Defcon.
435820	445700	We've had issues with certain Defcon groups that are actually trying to do some illegal things, maybe for the right reasons, but it's the wrong way.
445700	451640	We cannot promote that in Defcon groups and Defcon groups official channels.
451960	456490	That is not the correct way to go about it. You don't affect change.
456490	460170	Well, actually, sometimes you do affect change by committing crimes.
460170	466870	But it's like some of the ones that were expressively sent out are not it.
466870	475390	So we need to be careful about that and also understand that we are a global community.
476190	485450	And that's all nice when we're all talking about Kumbaya, everybody getting together, everybody agreeing.
485450	501490	But how things should be. But when our countries come into conflict, we sometimes forget that the Defcon group is not about the politics or the government.
501490	504670	It's about the people who live in that country.
505370	510890	We are united as hackers. That's our tribe.
510890	519850	It's like it's not our geographical ethnicity. It's not our political ethnicity.
520750	525930	It is our tribe. It is our cultural ethnicity that I'm talking about.
525990	537590	It's like and that's what we need to remember. Everybody wants to make it black and white, which is totally outdated, flawed and never right to begin with in the first place.
537590	545930	It's like so we need to talk ethnicity. It's like and as my tribe, as my cultural tribe that I identify with, it's hackers.
546010	552510	So it doesn't matter where you are in the world. You're part of my tribe.
553170	562490	It's like be it in Iran, be it in Russia, be it in Paraguay, even the Paraguayans, no offense to any Paraguayans, but they know what happened.
563380	569330	Any country in the world, if there's a hacker there, you're part of my tribe.
569330	574330	It doesn't matter what your government is doing. It doesn't matter what my government is doing.
574330	581330	We are still together. We still share our common interest.
581330	593310	It's like we should not let these kind of conflicts tear us apart and say, well, because this thing is happening and it's horrible, I have to say you're horrible as well.
594430	597130	That's not the way it should be.
597770	605950	You need to understand that those people that are in those DEF CON groups, they don't affect the change.
605950	609550	They don't make the government do what it's doing.
609550	617710	They're just as much a victim in most times to the government as the other ones are from other countries.
618530	633990	When the U.S. got involved and did invasions and they propped up government regimes in other countries, I was not happy about that.
634170	638050	I protested. I said that those things were wrong.
638050	645510	It doesn't make me a person who's unpatriotic. It's like I love my country enough to say we can do better.
646050	649050	But I can't be hated by other countries.
649050	660120	So why do we expect that other people should be held accountable for what their governments are doing?
660660	665580	I will go anywhere in the world that I'm invited and welcomed.
665580	672500	It's like because it doesn't matter what an invisible line on a map says. It's like we are one tribe.
672920	679260	We are hackers and we need to remember that more, especially in the way the world is today.
679980	687500	It's like if the apocalypse and COVID has taught us anything, we are a highly connected world.
687640	692260	It's like information moves at the speed of light.
692260	697020	The universe is almost as fast because we are so interconnected.
698100	703640	So stop trying to say that these little divisions are separating us.
703860	709020	That's not the way it works. That's not the way it should ever work.
710780	714380	We establish who our tribe is.
714720	720400	We establish what we want our tribe to be.
720400	726360	Not the government, not cultural norms in the country that we reside in.
726360	733500	But as a global community, we say this is what we stand for. This is what's acceptable.
733500	741300	And the beauty of the hacking culture and the hacking ethnicity is not everybody is going to agree.
741300	743400	And that's totally okay.
743400	749680	As long as you're not harming others, roll your own way.
750660	754940	As long as you're doing no harm, roll your own way.
755000	761820	But also respect other people's views and how they see the world.
762920	774440	So I will always, always say when I'm having a thing, especially in an online debate with someone,
774440	780620	I will get to the point where I will say, look, this is your point, this is mine.
780620	783540	I'm going to respectfully disagree.
783700	785280	And that's okay.
785380	788440	I don't have to win the argument.
788440	791080	It's like I don't have to let them lose.
791080	795360	I can just say, hey, we're going to respectfully disagree.
796160	797440	Move on.
798220	800720	It doesn't have to be a fight.
801400	808720	One of the things I love about AllSpaceVR and having this event here is that that's a person.
808720	809900	That's a person.
809900	811020	That's a person.
811020	812240	That's a person.
812240	813300	That's a person.
813300	813900	That's a person.
813900	814240	That's a bot.
814240	815260	That's a person.
815260	816500	That's a person.
816500	817660	That's a person.
817660	818840	That's a bot.
818840	821120	It's like just like in real life online.
821120	824000	You got bots and you got real people.
824000	827480	But the majority of them are real.
828340	836880	Behind every keyboard, you are dealing with a real person dealing with real problems in the place that they're living in.
837400	839980	Why do we forget that so often?
840720	843680	That is why DEF CON groups are so important.
843680	846720	That is why DEF CON is so important.
846720	853280	Because once a year, you can meet up in hot, stinky Vegas.
853580	859440	It's like and realize, oh, you're real.
859740	862100	This is what you look like in real life.
862100	865220	I get to actually, you know, hug if that's OK for you.
865220	871600	I get to actually talk to you and share and like, you know, enjoy time and have dinner with you.
871600	878120	And share a moment in the life, not behind a keyboard, not by an avatar.
878120	886160	You start realizing that there's actually people attached to those avatars, to those handles, to those names on the keyboard.
887620	890420	DEF CON groups allows you to do that as well.
890540	895740	Because you get to meet with hackers that you've never met, maybe, except for online.
895740	900160	And they live in the same city as you for years.
900160	905280	And then you get to meet up with them in real life and now you have friends.
905660	914040	I do not know about you, but with my social anxiety and being on the spectrum, making friends as an adult is hard.
914380	918100	It's like, I mean, it was really worse in high school, but it's like even hard now.
918440	928300	It's like, so why would you pass up the opportunity to meet with your local friends, your local tribe?
928300	930100	It's like in your city.
930100	933220	I mean, yeah, you're going to have to probably put on pants or pajamas.
933220	935420	It's like whichever is acceptable.
935480	940760	But still, it's like you get to see them in real life and that's what counts.
940760	944640	And yes, I have attended some groups in pajama bottoms.
944820	946220	Don't judge me.
946220	948980	So that's how it's supposed to be, people.
950020	952500	That's what DEF CON groups is all about.
952500	955760	But we're here sharing information.
955900	962520	While we're up here sharing this information and talking and networking, you actually get to...
962520	968560	The lucky ones that are in the VR right now get to actually see the people that they're talking to.
968560	971160	They actually get to join conversations.
971600	980380	It's like, I hope that other people will... more and more people will see how cool this is and get more people participating and doing this.
980380	985460	Because this application is free with a registration.
985540	989700	And it's like we can't make fake email addresses.
990340	994180	But a free registration and it runs on any platform.
994340	996600	That's what it's about.
997140	998900	That's what's so cool.
1000040	1002040	So start connecting.
1002080	1007720	Don't just be in these events and listening to the speakers.
1007720	1010560	One, start speaking up and becoming a speaker.
1010560	1013560	Because we need more voices in this community.
1013560	1018440	We need more speakers from all walks of life in this community.
1018620	1021220	It's like... but also socialize.
1021220	1023340	Get to know some of these people.
1023720	1025020	It's like, start understanding.
1025020	1028720	Because we all understand that one thing right now for certain...
1031900	1033560	You're part of my tribe.
1033560	1034780	You're a hacker.
1034780	1036220	There is no bar.
1037720	1039140	That's the gatekeepers.
1039140	1041200	If there was a gate, you jump it.
1041200	1042440	We're hackers.
1042520	1043600	Or go under it.
1043600	1044400	Or around it.
1044400	1045640	Who cares?
1046640	1048720	That shouldn't matter to us.
1049600	1052380	So don't let those things stop you.
1052780	1054920	It's like... so welcome to here.
1054920	1056360	Welcome for being here.
1056700	1062860	This was a very short keynote because once again, not adulting or professional.
1062860	1065920	But what I would like to do is open it up for questions.
1065920	1067920	If you have questions about DEF CON groups...
1069100	1070620	Actually, I'll answer any questions.
1070620	1071920	So if you've got any questions...
1072580	1075540	And be warned, I do not filter.
1075920	1078160	So I always like to say that as a disclaimer.
1078160	1082820	So if you ask me a question 9 times out of 10, I'm going to answer it.
1082820	1086220	9.9% out of 10.
1086960	1091060	So we'll let it open for anybody that wants to ask a question.
1091240	1093580	They can ask a question right now.
1093580	1094920	We've got a question right here.
1095920	1096860	We've got a question here.
1098020	1099660	Hey, it's Jess.
1099660	1100500	Hey, it's Jess.
1100500	1103160	Yep. Hello.
1103160	1104560	I have a question.
1104680	1110340	What if there isn't really like a DEF CON group in your specific area?
1110340	1111640	How do you make one?
1112060	1113600	Oh my gosh, I love that.
1113600	1114720	Hey, it's Jess.
1118420	1123060	How do you make one?
1123820	1125960	Because that's what I always tell people.
1125960	1129160	It's like, find your local DEF CON group.
1129160	1131260	And if there isn't one, start one.
1131260	1133220	That's your invitation to start one.
1133220	1136260	And you start it by emailing.
1136260	1141320	And we'll probably eventually put the link up on the screen or on the side.
1141520	1145800	But it's literally just going to either...
1150910	1153270	DCG groups? I'm going to say it wrong.
1153270	1154810	I need an adult.
1154870	1157030	But it's literally sending an email.
1157030	1159690	But going to defcongroups.org first,
1159690	1162190	it will actually have the FAQ,
1162190	1164850	which will actually walk you through on the email,
1164850	1166850	who you send it to,
1166850	1170790	and then what you need to fill in for the application.
1171430	1175630	So just go to defcongroups.org,
1175630	1179290	then look for the FAQ and look for the introduction,
1179290	1181050	which shows you that information.
1181290	1184390	And also remember that there are volunteers
1184390	1186810	that are the ones that are handling the application.
1187030	1191070	We are trying to knock those out as quickly as possible.
1191190	1193130	But life happens.
1193390	1195670	It's like an apocalypse has happened.
1195670	1198450	So it's like some take longer than others,
1198450	1201890	but we will be around and we will be available.
1202670	1211510	So submit from defcongroups.org.
1211730	1213990	Are there any other questions?
1215030	1217650	By the way, there's going to be a talk this afternoon at 1 o'clock
1217650	1219430	on how to start and run a group.
1219850	1222790	Oh, that's great. At 1 o'clock PST,
1222790	1226490	there is going to be a talk on how to start your own group.
1228090	1228890	Perfect.
1229930	1231310	I should have started off with that,
1231310	1234210	but I forgot to look at the schedule.
1235210	1236930	I don't filter. Sorry.
1238390	1240270	So are there any other questions?
1241650	1248470	If one can make it to an event, it's recorded, right?
1250410	1254230	On Defcon Groups, it depends on the...
1254230	1255950	Oh, for here?
1255950	1260130	Are these recorded? I'm not sure if the DCG...
1260130	1262270	Yes, they are recorded.
1262270	1263970	We are recording them.
1264190	1264910	Okay, good.
1264910	1266830	Awesomeness. These guys are awesome.
1266830	1271250	Once again, we should all give some clapping to the team here.
1271250	1273450	I had hardly anything to do with all this.
1273450	1276650	It was the volunteers. It's the people who are putting in time.
1276770	1278810	X-Ray 800XL.
1278810	1283250	It's like so many other people that I'm forgetting because I didn't plan.
1283290	1286530	But those are the ones that actually make this happen.
1286530	1288110	This whole...
1288110	1290530	Go explore this space.
1290530	1294110	This was done with love and respect for Defcon.
1294110	1296830	All the little hidden little Easter eggs.
1297030	1299790	Just warms my heart every time I go through it.
1299870	1301970	Including checking out the roof on the pool.
1302410	1304370	It's just my favorite.
1304370	1305590	So, yes.
1305690	1308690	Not this roof, but in the other area.
1308690	1311590	But definitely check it out. Check out the whole area.
1311590	1313230	There's history in here.
1313370	1315410	Go have a Trevor milkshake.
1315490	1318410	Go see some of the other things that are here.
1319090	1320570	It'll be awesome.
1320570	1325490	I definitely just think it's a really cool thing for y'all to be able to see and do.
1325870	1329830	Hopefully, if we get enough interest, we will start doing these monthly.
1330610	1335310	And there'll be more socializing and we'll have speakers as well.
1335410	1337830	I think that'll be such a great thing.
1337830	1343890	So, please get involved in your local areas for Defcon groups.
1343950	1346330	And also for the Global Village.
1346330	1348130	Try to be there as well.
1348130	1354550	And also, it's like I hope to see you at Defcon at some point for a hug or just a hello.
1354710	1356790	Either way is fine with me.
1356790	1359330	So, you all take care.
1359390	1364210	It was great. I'm going to actually now run.
1364250	1372210	My Oculus is actually fogged up because I ran all the way from the contest area to get over here in time for this talk.
1372210	1375950	And now I'm going to go run all the way back to the contest area.
1375950	1381490	And I will be in the contest area for Defcon till 1 p.m.
1381570	1386170	PST talking to people, showing them the virtual reality area.
1386170	1391870	I will also probably getting on the bot for the DCG guest right over here.
1391870	1394710	He's up in the upper audience now.
1394710	1399650	It's like I will actually be meeting with all those people.
1400400	1407850	It's like online and in person at Defcon in about 30 minutes or so.
1407850	1409830	So, I hope to see you there.
1409830	1414430	And I hope to see you in here still a little bit later when we socializing.
1414430	1416110	But you all take care.
1416110	1420990	Thanks again for showing up because this doesn't happen without you.
1420990	1425690	Local Defcon groups do not happen without you.
1425690	1428650	This stuff doesn't occur in a vacuum.
1428650	1431790	And it takes patience.
1431790	1433230	And it takes time.
1433230	1435150	And it takes effort.
1435150	1437710	And it's not always easy.
1437830	1441390	But that's okay because we're hackers. We're used to difficult.
1441390	1442850	We're used to making it more difficult.
1442850	1446410	But still, we're used to difficult. We can do this.
1446530	1450390	So, I hope to see you all creating these Defcon groups.
1450430	1453250	Spreading this kind of ethos.
1453250	1457450	And understanding and welcoming more people to our tribe.
1457450	1464590	Because seriously, as hackers, everybody is welcome in this tribe.
1467990	1470730	Everyone means well for everyone else.
1470730	1472230	There's always a caveat, people.
1472230	1473970	It's like because we're dealing with humans.
1473970	1480890	But seriously, most of the people who mean well, who are trying to make things better,
1480890	1482850	you're welcome in this tribe.
1482850	1487410	We need more helpers in this tribe, in this world.
1487450	1490210	So, start trying to be that more.
1491070	1492110	Bye.
1492730	1493750	Mic drop.
1493750	1495630	Thank you, Jason. And thank you for...
1496730	1497430	Thanks, Jason.
1500110	1503310	Very cool. Have a good time in meatspace.
1503830	1505190	I'm gonna try.
1505190	1505990	Okay.
1507130	1510450	Our next speaker will be here at...
1511390	1514230	Let's see, that'll be 11 o'clock Vegas time.
1514230	1518390	That's roughly 20, 36 minutes from now.
1518390	1523430	And the talk will be on cyber attack trends in 2022 by John Clay.
1523430	1526270	So, make sure you're back here to see that.
1526270	1529850	By the way, if you're... there are screens in some of the other areas
1529850	1534430	that you can actually watch and listen to the talk from those areas.
1534430	1536330	You don't actually have to be in this room.
1536650	1537170	But...
1537170	1541090	Yeah, use this 30 minutes to explore the whole area.
1541090	1543090	Go explore for the Easter eggs.
1543090	1546210	Go look and explore and see what the other rooms are.
1546210	1549090	There's other rooms involved, not just this area.
1549750	1551710	Go have fun and explore.
1552270	1554710	Seeing the badge back there give me major feels.
1555210	1557610	Because I moved to Asia and now I got kids.
1557610	1559410	I'm not gonna be able to go back to Vegas for a while.
1559410	1561830	But seeing the little badge display over there,
1561830	1563850	I really like giving me big feels.
1564430	1565230	Awesome.
1565530	1566890	That's what it's all about.
1566890	1569010	So, I'm really excited for that.
1569890	1570850	Yep.
1570910	1574590	Oh, and if you notice on the bar, it's got a milkshake.
1574590	1580610	That's from the Trevor Grifter 801 incident at DerbyCon.
1580610	1584330	It's like the Trevor cockroach in the milkshake joke.
1584470	1585310	So, it's...
1585950	1588410	So, but there's all little things like that.
1588410	1589290	They're everywhere.
1589290	1590530	It's like you just got to find them.
1590530	1592750	So, spend the 30 minutes just looking around.
1592750	1597050	And you don't understand the effort it took to create these things
1597050	1598810	out of scratch.
1598810	1601630	The developers deserve all the credit for this.
1601630	1603610	They did so much wonderful work
1604470	1607690	to put these kind of little touches in there.
1608130	1609990	So, y'all take care.
1609990	1611250	I got to take off now.
