[00:00.000 --> 00:02.540] We're at the DEF CON 30 Memorial Room. [00:02.540 --> 00:04.680] Now, we were hesitant to even shoot this, [00:04.680 --> 00:06.380] but then as we talked to the organizers, [00:06.380 --> 00:09.380] I think it makes sense we should be here. [00:09.380 --> 00:14.100] The Memorial Room came after Dan Kaminsky passed away. [00:14.300 --> 00:16.800] And it was interesting when that happened [00:16.800 --> 00:19.340] because most people didn't hear about it [00:19.340 --> 00:22.020] until coming to CON. [00:22.020 --> 00:23.060] CON has grown. [00:23.060 --> 00:27.040] It's 30 years old and it's grown every single year. [00:27.080 --> 00:28.840] And people meet friends here. [00:28.840 --> 00:31.500] And you see those friends once a year. [00:31.500 --> 00:33.520] And oftentimes you come to CON [00:33.520 --> 00:35.320] and it can ruin your whole CON experience [00:35.320 --> 00:38.660] when you've hit here and find out someone you liked, [00:38.660 --> 00:40.420] loved, passed away. [00:40.540 --> 00:43.020] And this is a room that was set up for DEF CON [00:43.020 --> 00:46.640] to come and either write in a memorial book, [00:46.640 --> 00:49.660] come, you know, find a rock, put their name on it, [00:49.660 --> 00:51.680] share stories about those individuals, [00:52.160 --> 00:55.040] or even like have wristbands, [00:55.040 --> 00:57.180] sharing the name and dropping them here [00:57.180 --> 01:02.360] so someone else can, you know, participate, [01:02.360 --> 01:04.620] you know, experience maybe their name [01:04.620 --> 01:06.640] or look them up, see their name, [01:06.640 --> 01:09.660] go look up what they experienced at DEF CON. [01:09.660 --> 01:10.740] I want to sit down here. [01:10.740 --> 01:12.100] I want to hear more about it. [01:12.100 --> 01:13.900] There was even another station over here [01:13.900 --> 01:16.920] where you could send your phones [01:16.920 --> 01:20.300] to your favorite pictures of these people, [01:20.300 --> 01:21.460] send them an email, [01:21.460 --> 01:25.080] and then print them off and tape them around the room. [01:25.200 --> 01:26.620] I love this. [01:26.620 --> 01:30.240] I absolutely love this concept of this. [01:30.240 --> 01:33.520] Thank you for like taking the time to sit down with us [01:33.520 --> 01:34.640] and letting us do this video [01:34.640 --> 01:38.200] because I think this is an important aspect to DEF CON, [01:38.200 --> 01:42.860] especially as it's gotten, 30 years is a long time. [01:42.860 --> 01:45.860] I mean, it's interesting, even the progression of CON [01:45.860 --> 01:49.580] as we've gotten older, we've had kids [01:49.580 --> 01:53.980] and now DEF CON for kids is starting more and more. [01:54.440 --> 01:56.440] And, but as we all get older, [01:56.440 --> 02:00.540] things like these real things we have to start dealing with. [02:01.140 --> 02:02.120] Very true. [02:02.120 --> 02:05.380] Can you tell me about like, wow, you started this. [02:05.380 --> 02:07.900] It started, I believe last year. [02:08.800 --> 02:14.600] Well, it really started with Dan Kaminsky's [02:15.200 --> 02:19.840] online virtual funeral that had so many people [02:20.830 --> 02:23.180] and he had such an effect. [02:25.140 --> 02:28.240] And I cry way easy. [02:28.920 --> 02:34.060] And Dark Tanyan realized out of our community [02:35.140 --> 02:38.440] acknowledging and supporting and honoring people [02:38.440 --> 02:45.620] for their lives and doing it because of their passing [02:47.040 --> 02:50.000] is something missing from our community. [02:50.000 --> 02:53.720] And for him, DEF CON is so about community. [02:54.390 --> 02:59.580] And so this started a conversation after that time. [03:01.540 --> 03:06.080] And I've worked with Jeff on DEF CON and Black Hat [03:06.080 --> 03:08.500] since DEF CON seven. [03:08.740 --> 03:11.120] And he knows a lot about my background, [03:11.120 --> 03:16.540] which is not at all hacker, very oddly, [03:17.210 --> 03:23.700] much more energy work, but I do it here. [03:25.340 --> 03:29.100] And so as this came up, I sent him a note [03:29.100 --> 03:32.180] and reminded him of the background I have, [03:32.180 --> 03:34.740] which is a lot of time dealing with death and dying [03:34.740 --> 03:36.800] and people who are in grief. [03:37.500 --> 03:41.400] And so this came about and it's our second year. [03:42.120 --> 03:44.200] Last year was great. [03:44.200 --> 03:47.160] It was small, but DEF CON was small last year. [03:47.160 --> 03:48.800] Yeah, it was really intimate. [03:48.800 --> 03:49.560] Yeah. [03:50.480 --> 03:52.960] And so we came back this year [03:53.560 --> 03:56.700] and I'm hoping we expand it [03:56.700 --> 04:01.620] so we have a way throughout the year for people to connect, [04:02.340 --> 04:03.920] have to see with Jeff, [04:03.920 --> 04:06.840] if we can get some space on the website or whatever, [04:06.840 --> 04:08.700] whatever would make sense. [04:11.040 --> 04:13.480] And that we have a little more [04:17.840 --> 04:20.680] of the beauty of DEF CON next year. [04:20.680 --> 04:23.560] We have a wonderful glass. [04:23.560 --> 04:25.360] Can you hand me? [04:26.060 --> 04:31.300] This was one of the items sold at DEF CON [04:31.300 --> 04:33.180] because she was part of the branding [04:33.720 --> 04:36.960] and I think 24, DEF CON 24. [04:37.380 --> 04:40.640] And to me, she kind of looks like, [04:41.260 --> 04:43.700] I don't know, Hacker Madonna. [04:45.200 --> 04:47.540] So I brought it this year [04:47.540 --> 04:52.560] and we have our little appropriate hotel LED candles. [04:55.460 --> 05:02.160] So we're here and people drop in and it's amazing. [05:02.160 --> 05:04.100] I think what's so interesting and something you said [05:04.100 --> 05:06.700] is like having like a spot on the website [05:06.700 --> 05:07.900] to hear from the community [05:08.480 --> 05:10.780] and have a place to celebrate these people [05:10.780 --> 05:11.820] who have come to DEF CON [05:11.820 --> 05:13.220] who have poured their lives into it [05:13.220 --> 05:14.520] and poured their lives in to connect [05:14.520 --> 05:16.380] with so many other people. [05:16.880 --> 05:18.040] Having a place for that, [05:18.040 --> 05:19.700] because I do think it's hard [05:19.700 --> 05:21.520] when you come back year after year. [05:21.740 --> 05:25.040] I know it happened to me one time as I came to DEF CON, [05:25.040 --> 05:27.120] you become excited to see friends [05:27.120 --> 05:29.380] and then you see one and then you see another [05:29.380 --> 05:33.520] and then the one you're expecting to see is gone. [05:33.520 --> 05:34.200] You didn't hear about it [05:34.200 --> 05:36.940] because you have these DEF CON friends. [05:36.940 --> 05:38.540] You have friends you hang out with all the time [05:38.540 --> 05:41.540] and you have other ones you see once a year. [05:42.060 --> 05:44.580] So I love this space. [05:45.320 --> 05:48.380] Especially, it's a time where you can come [05:48.380 --> 05:52.100] and reflect and think about those hackers [05:52.100 --> 05:54.280] who aren't with us anymore. [05:54.820 --> 05:56.780] And especially with the chaos, [05:56.780 --> 05:59.580] like right outside the door, running, villages. [05:59.580 --> 06:01.060] It is DEF CON over there. [06:01.060 --> 06:06.980] It was, it's good to take time to step away, [06:06.980 --> 06:08.620] almost even like turn your phone off [06:08.620 --> 06:11.320] and just time to just spend. [06:11.640 --> 06:14.100] And I think that's, that is a piece of it. [06:14.100 --> 06:15.640] So he said, if you come here [06:16.100 --> 06:20.400] and discover something has occurred, someone is gone. [06:21.360 --> 06:26.340] It's hard in the chaos of DEF CON, [06:26.340 --> 06:30.860] which is brilliant and wonderful and creative, [06:31.380 --> 06:35.220] but it's a hard energy to kind of be in [06:35.960 --> 06:39.840] and be present while you're trying to adjust [06:39.840 --> 06:42.340] to what you've just found out. [06:42.340 --> 06:47.340] So knowing over the years that there is a space in DEF CON [06:47.680 --> 06:52.960] where you can go and process it, let it go. [06:52.960 --> 06:58.300] I mean, DEF CON is and has been since the beginning [06:59.320 --> 07:03.300] aware of the fact that we all have human frailties. [07:03.300 --> 07:05.900] I mean, we have a 12 step meeting here [07:06.420 --> 07:09.600] and have for as long as I recall. [07:10.340 --> 07:18.120] And again, for me, it's just as a community, [07:18.120 --> 07:21.740] if we lived as a community, [07:21.740 --> 07:25.900] if we were that tribe, when someone got sick [07:26.380 --> 07:30.460] and then if they passed, everyone is there [07:30.460 --> 07:34.540] and they're there to support that person's family. [07:35.500 --> 07:42.020] And we have some things from friends of Tuna [07:42.020 --> 07:48.160] who passed in 2019 and they actually came [07:48.700 --> 07:51.400] and he didn't make it to DEF CON that year [07:51.400 --> 07:55.160] because he passed away during DEF CON at home [07:56.520 --> 08:03.340] and they held his memorial here in Flamingo. [08:04.960 --> 08:08.040] And I don't think we understand yet [08:08.620 --> 08:12.100] quite the intensity of the connection. [08:12.420 --> 08:16.020] In a sense we do, but I don't think we fully get it [08:16.780 --> 08:23.320] because we haven't yet brought it into the bigger DEF CON. [08:23.340 --> 08:24.940] Well, it's interesting to me. [08:24.940 --> 08:26.340] We did another video on the channel [08:26.920 --> 08:29.920] which was, what was your best tip for DEF CON? [08:29.920 --> 08:33.920] And it was funny because it wasn't go hack away [08:33.920 --> 08:35.980] at something and again, some of them were like, [08:35.980 --> 08:37.060] go learn something. [08:37.060 --> 08:40.540] But all of those had this interesting underplay to it. [08:40.540 --> 08:42.560] It was this interesting under note to it. [08:42.560 --> 08:46.420] It was go play a challenge to meet other people. [08:46.500 --> 08:50.780] Go explore a village to meet other people. [08:50.780 --> 08:53.680] Go find your passion. [08:53.680 --> 08:56.060] Find your tribe was what you said. [08:56.860 --> 08:59.800] And as one of the people on our channel says [08:59.800 --> 09:02.680] is find your hacker family at DEF CON. [09:03.060 --> 09:04.540] But no matter what the tip was, [09:04.540 --> 09:08.140] it was always people were the underlying one. [09:08.140 --> 09:10.980] And it's interesting to me that 30 years [09:10.980 --> 09:12.860] is the time where we go, [09:12.860 --> 09:16.740] that is not a insignificant amount of time [09:16.740 --> 09:18.280] to grow these relationships [09:18.280 --> 09:20.500] which are fueled by that passion. [09:20.860 --> 09:25.560] And have a place to be able to share that with others. [09:25.800 --> 09:27.240] I really do thank you. [09:27.240 --> 09:29.040] Thank you for taking the time [09:29.040 --> 09:32.520] and actually considering this village and growing it. [09:33.100 --> 09:36.360] It's a weird thing to say I'm excited about this, [09:36.360 --> 09:40.360] but I think it draws us to that core of what DEF CON is. [09:40.360 --> 09:42.240] There is the challenges. [09:42.240 --> 09:43.620] There is the technical things. [09:43.620 --> 09:46.480] But at the core of it, it is the people. [09:46.740 --> 09:48.720] When I first, excuse me, [09:48.720 --> 09:51.840] when Jeff first brought me to see DEF CON [09:52.920 --> 09:54.740] and I was slightly terrified [09:54.740 --> 09:57.740] because I only knew about hackers from the local news [09:57.740 --> 10:00.260] which is not exactly what is. [10:00.730 --> 10:05.180] And I had just come out of doing five days in the desert [10:05.180 --> 10:08.220] doing a shamanic training with people, [10:08.220 --> 10:10.440] just part of my other world. [10:11.350 --> 10:14.000] And I first ran into some young kids [10:14.000 --> 10:15.800] talking to this elder gentleman [10:15.800 --> 10:19.520] and wanting to know, asking for information. [10:19.520 --> 10:21.080] Tell me about this. [10:21.080 --> 10:22.610] Tell me about that. [10:23.280 --> 10:27.600] Lo and behold, he's an upper level person at NSA [10:27.600 --> 10:32.720] and they're trying to gather all this information [10:32.720 --> 10:36.060] from someone who could be their grandfather, [10:36.060 --> 10:40.460] which in my world is missing in our world. [10:40.460 --> 10:42.780] We don't turn to elders. [10:43.440 --> 10:45.300] And then I ran into this young man [10:45.300 --> 10:48.620] who had come in from London, never been here before. [10:48.620 --> 10:53.660] And he had this goal of pulling together hackers [10:54.500 --> 10:59.710] who would then work together to shut down websites [11:00.300 --> 11:05.580] that were promoting children for sale. [11:06.560 --> 11:10.020] And his idea is the governments can't do this [11:10.020 --> 11:12.760] because those countries, it's not an issue. [11:13.400 --> 11:16.460] Hackers could maybe knock enough down on a regular basis [11:16.460 --> 11:20.420] to at least slow their business down. [11:20.420 --> 11:24.760] And seeing those two aspects of community, [11:25.280 --> 11:27.240] I had friends going, you did what with, [11:27.240 --> 11:28.700] what you were with? [11:28.700 --> 11:31.720] I was like, it's one of the most amazing communities [11:31.720 --> 11:33.120] I've ever seen. [11:33.120 --> 11:35.400] And it was baby at that time. [11:35.900 --> 11:37.780] And watching it grow, [11:40.520 --> 11:41.980] it's astounding. [11:41.980 --> 11:43.800] And I'm still here. [11:43.800 --> 11:46.460] I've shifted out of what I did to what I'm doing. [11:46.460 --> 11:49.060] And then over to this, [11:49.060 --> 11:53.760] because this community is growing [11:54.620 --> 11:59.280] and deserves to be offered such things. [12:00.620 --> 12:05.880] Because it's important for their own sense of community [12:05.880 --> 12:07.940] and being who they are. [12:08.640 --> 12:09.820] Thank you. [12:09.820 --> 12:11.040] That's all I can say. [12:11.040 --> 12:11.860] Thank you. [12:11.860 --> 12:13.220] Well, thank you. [12:13.220 --> 12:15.240] I hope this is one of those places [12:15.240 --> 12:19.060] that you as a viewer comes and experiences, [12:19.060 --> 12:23.780] especially if you've been coming to DEF CON for a long time, [12:23.780 --> 12:25.920] this is definitely a place to, [12:25.920 --> 12:27.540] it's an experience you're, [12:28.420 --> 12:30.520] it's hard to put into words. [12:30.740 --> 12:31.800] Thanks for watching.
