    "text": " Hey everyone, I'm here at DEF CON 30. So excited to be back at the convention and I'm here with Justin Justin. Hello. I love your username by the way. Thanks. I'm here in the Car Hacking Village and I really wanted to chat with you about everything that's going on in here. I know you have a lot happening over the weekend. We do. Currently y'all are building to open up tomorrow. Tell me about the demo that you're going to be showing off here. I'm really interested. Yeah, so we'll have a demo that we'll be showing throughout the weekend here with this vehicle right here, which is a 2018 Honda Civic. For those that haven't seen, there was a news article a few weeks ago publishing how to use a flipper essentially to unlock this vehicle. I love the flipper. I'm not going to get into too much details because the speaker will be giving a talk and he'll be out here doing demos as well. So I'll let him get into more details about it, but definitely come and check the demo out. It's a lot of fun. I saw an article about the flipper and how you can hack the Honda Civic. It's definitely really cool. I can't wait to see the speaker come in and do that. You also have a CTF happening for everybody who is here in person, correct? That's correct. How is that working out? It's really well. We've done a CTF every year. Some of the years we've actually given out black badges at the end. Last year we were a black badge CTF, so that was really cool. Nice. We usually try to change it up every year. We have a lot of pretty difficult challenges. Years ago we used to have a lot of challenges and it was kind of hard to keep track of. Recently we changed it to have fewer challenges but very difficult, so it's a little bit more challenging for people. You can sign up at ctf.carhackingvillage.com. Like she was saying, you have to be in person here. There will be a scoreboard eventually set up and it will all be there for everyone to see. So let's say that I'm brand new to the Car Hacking Village but I really want to get into it. I want to be a part of the CTF. Are there people here who can help me out and show me what I need to do or maybe give me some leads on how I can break into it? Yeah, definitely. You actually kind of touched on a good topic here. One of the reasons we like the Car Hacking Village and provide this for everybody is so there's a bunch of experts as well as cars and different tools for people to play around with. I think it's very important for learning. It's good for safety. Yeah, safety too because you have a bunch of people that have been in the industry for years. There's automotive engineers, there's hackers here, there's tons of different people from the automotive industry that are here to help. So yeah, from the CTF or if you just want to learn like what can I do on this car, where can I plug in, things like that. There's a lot of people around that are definitely helping for that kind of stuff. I'm so excited to see it and I love that you are welcoming to people who have never done it before. That's something that I felt like DEF CON has always been really open about and really good for complete newbies. Agreed, completely. That's one of the reasons why I love DEF CON and doing this stuff. There's so many people that see things in the news, they hear whatever's going on, they're like, oh I can go out to Vegas and check out this event. And then they come out here and it's just like a lot of people I don't think know about the villages that much. They see the talks and they hear about it from that angle, but I think highlighting these villages and getting people to understand that you can actually play hands-on and start tinkering with things live with experts around is very valuable. Absolutely, I agree. That's the best way to learn. I mean, hands-on is absolutely the best way. And speaking of which, you also have a really cool badge this year. We do. I have a few of the previous badges. They're amazing, by the way. Yeah, this is our badge this year. It's called the OBD Kill. Sorry, that's hard to say. There are methods and ways, and I won't give them away because you guys can figure it out, to actually kill the CAN bus through OBD. So if you plug this into your car's OBD connector, you can essentially kill your bus. There's a Raspberry Pi Pico up there, so you can reprogram it as well. What are some of the things that you can do with your badge? Well, one of the things is interact with the CAN network. A lot of it's just directly through the buttons here. Outside of that, I don't know everything. So basically, you have to come here and find out what it does and teach everybody else. Yeah, the guy who created it, he'll be doing a talk as well.
