[00:00.560 --> 00:06.800] Hi, I'm Whitney Merrill with the Crypto and Privacy Village. Here we have folks from all over [00:06.800 --> 00:12.660] working on puzzles, talking about cryptography, talking about privacy, and really, you know, [00:12.660 --> 00:18.460] sharing knowledge, both introductory topics on privacy, as well as like deep crypto topics like [00:18.460 --> 00:23.420] quantum resistant cryptography. I think we try to create a puzzle for all different types of people [00:23.420 --> 00:28.400] with different types of knowledge. And so I see kids working on our puzzles, I see adults working [00:28.400 --> 00:32.720] on our puzzles. The hope is that you have to work with other people who have different types [00:32.720 --> 00:38.000] of knowledge in order to solve it. So there's not like a specific persona who is the one that we're [00:38.000 --> 00:44.460] trying to target to try to solve the puzzle. The Crypto and Privacy Village is a 501c3. So we take [00:44.460 --> 00:51.360] donations at DEF CON, and then give like a thank you gift with that donation. We've been running [00:51.360 --> 00:55.980] this village now for our ninth year. And this helps us do just kind of the basic infrastructure, [00:55.980 --> 01:02.700] our storage unit, our annual operating costs, etc. But we are 100% volunteer run. But all of [01:02.700 --> 01:07.280] the money that's donated to us goes to continuing to operate this village year after year. We have [01:07.460 --> 01:12.240] a puzzle going on right now called the Gold Bug. We've been running it for many years. And so folks [01:12.240 --> 01:20.100] are working on that puzzle. I'm Kevin Cryptoc on Discord and Twitter. I'm here with the Gold Bug [01:20.640 --> 01:28.080] Challenge. The Gold Bug Challenge is a crypto puzzle. This year we have a series of 11 puzzles. [01:28.320 --> 01:35.600] Our theme is back to school. So each of the puzzles is based off of a different school subject. [01:35.680 --> 01:41.960] If you go to our website and goldbug.cryptovillage.org, you can download all the puzzles. We [01:41.960 --> 01:47.780] also have a BBS system up there where you can you can submit your answers. I encourage you to go [01:47.780 --> 01:54.680] on our Discord and find a team to work on some of the problems. Your first challenge is going to be [01:54.680 --> 02:02.300] figuring out what you're supposed to do. It's largely a bunch of classic crypto style puzzles, [02:02.300 --> 02:08.980] so not a lot of deep RSA or elliptic curve crypto or anything like that, but definitely not [02:08.980 --> 02:14.200] something that is going to be obvious. The teams that have won in the past have spent their entire [02:14.200 --> 02:22.320] con working on the contest. It takes some resiliency and some ingenuity and creativity to [02:22.320 --> 02:28.720] get to the end. I will say that as the contest goes on, we will start dropping hints to help teams [02:29.360 --> 02:35.620] make progress. Everyone enjoys a contest that, you know, enables you to have those eureka moments. [02:35.620 --> 02:40.080] No one enjoys a contest that just keeps you frustrated. So it's not our intent to make you [02:40.780 --> 02:45.920] hate the puzzle. We want you to have fun. So we'll help you along. Please ask questions. Come [02:45.920 --> 02:51.320] visit us in the Crypto Privacy Village. We have a table set up and we're eager to help you make [02:51.320 --> 02:56.620] progress. You know, even if you know nothing about cryptography or very little about privacy, [02:56.620 --> 03:02.040] you know, come on down, come check out our content. We have all of our previous talks that [03:02.040 --> 03:06.280] we've had over the years available on YouTube, either through Defcon or through our YouTube [03:06.940 --> 03:10.240] channel, which if you look up Crypto Village, you'll find it. [03:10.240 --> 03:14.680] And we really want to be a place where anyone can feel welcome. And so come on down.
