0	6420	Welcome back to DEF CON 31 and I am curious, what is everyone's favorite DEF CON tip?
6420	11600	So I have this sign right here which is, give me your DEF CON tip.
11600	15100	I actually forgot the word DEF CON so it's right there, but I'm thinking it's perfectly
15100	20660	fine to hold this sign out where people can see me and people can come up and give me
20660	23720	their best DEF CON tip.
23720	24500	Let's see.
24500	28840	What is your best DEF CON tip for someone who's never been before?
28840	30440	Go right up onto the mic.
30460	31520	Best DEF CON tip.
31520	35700	Grab your book, go through it, figure out the things that you're interested in, mark
35700	37060	it into three categories.
37060	40600	I want to see, would be nice to see, forget it.
40640	45400	And then always make sure that as you go to things, you have your fallback plan because
45400	46900	most things will be full.
46900	49980	DEF CON tip for newbies, always play scavenger hunt.
49980	50860	Yeah!
50980	52580	That's a good one.
52720	54980	What is your best DEF CON tip?
54980	56260	Wear deodorant.
56260	57920	That is an important one.
57920	59460	In shower.
59560	61580	Very good one, indeed.
61620	64280	If you want a badge, run a department.
64420	65380	Yeah!
65780	66720	Very good one.
66720	68740	Get involved at DEF CON.
68740	69920	Very good one.
69920	70860	Hey, what's up?
70860	73400	This is NoHackMe, your favorite goon's favorite goon.
73400	76860	My pro tip to all you newbies out there, bring some insoles.
76860	81500	The 3-2-1 rule doesn't really matter, burner phones are stupid because cell service sucks.
81780	82780	Get some insoles.
82780	86360	You walk more than you think, you're on your feet more than you think.
86360	89960	Get some insoles, next week your feet will thank you.
89960	93220	Use Hacker Tracker, it's not malware and you'll find everything you need.
93220	98200	Alright, drink plenty of water, stay hydrated and be open to anything and everybody.
98200	99100	Come say hi.
99100	99520	Nice!
99520	100400	Don't be shy.
100400	101360	Very good one.
101360	103460	Drink lots of water, meet more people.
103460	104360	Love it.
104360	106660	Probably hydrate before, like I've been doing.
107600	109220	That's the best thing, I think.
109220	110040	Water.
110040	111420	Most people probably don't do it.
111420	115360	And they're going to do a lot of other debaucheries that are going to require the water.
115360	116760	Lots of water.
116760	118260	I'd say debaucheries, too.
118860	119920	There you go.
119920	121100	Good shoes.
121100	122000	Good shoes.
122120	123160	Hydrate.
124460	128460	If you wear XL or bigger, baby powder.
129760	132520	This is about all the conversations you have in person.
132520	133560	The random ones.
133560	134980	The ones in the villages.
134980	136920	That's where the magic happens.
137140	138880	Merch will last longer than three hours.
138880	140540	You don't have to go right away.
140740	144420	Don't plug in any device into your computer that you don't trust.
144860	145340	It's a favorite.
146300	150060	Stay hydrated and stay cool.
150380	152560	Don't underestimate kids.
152560	153680	Ever.
154300	157640	My tip is don't trust anybody here, especially me.
157780	159200	Stay hydrated.
159280	162660	If you're here at DEF CON, you've got to make sure you drink lots of water.
162660	164880	Because if you're in a desert, it's dry.
164880	167060	You won't notice that you're getting dehydrated.
167060	168700	So only drink water.
170360	172280	Trader Joe's run for half and half.
172800	175580	And you have coffee in your room without a line.
176160	178020	Don't stand in Starbucks.
178020	180140	And you don't have to pay $12 for a coffee either.
180140	180760	Exactly.
180760	181780	A little powdered espresso.
181780	182400	Good stuff.
182400	183560	Medallia d'Oro.
183620	186460	Okay, so when you leave the Flamingo to get to everything else,
186460	189880	because the Flamingo is not attached through the Skywalk,
189880	191900	you want to go through O'Shea's.
191900	192840	It's a restaurant.
192840	196100	It's not really a restaurant because it's all still casino and it's really big.
196100	198660	No one's going to stop you or anything crazy like that.
198820	201480	But go around to the outside mall.
201480	202640	Find O'Shea's.
202640	204480	It's a little bit past the Starbucks.
205160	206420	You're going to be okay.
206420	207580	Follow the signs from there.
207580	208380	That's a very good one.
208380	209240	Thank you.
209440	211620	I don't know why people are making this dirty.
211620	212700	It says DEFCON.
212700	215360	People keep just telling me, like, just the tip.
215360	216860	It says DEFCON.
217060	219400	People are ridiculous.
219800	223760	I put this on the DEFCON Discord and here are the responses.
223760	225680	Without looking at them first, we got...
226080	226900	Here's the tip.
226900	228160	Don't F it up.
228160	229160	Just the tip.
229160	232880	Anything more requires a subscription to my OnlyFans.
234760	237700	So don't be afraid to do DEFCON by yourself.
237760	241040	So I have my group and we'll meet up at breakfast and dinner.
241040	243560	We actually split up and go separate ways in between.
243560	245400	And you meet so much more people that way.
245620	249980	So even if being outside by yourself is a little out of your comfort zone,
249980	250760	everyone is great.
250760	251780	So it's totally worth it.
251780	256600	My DEFCON tip for newbies is definitely going to be pick one or two talks
256600	258220	that you just have to be at.
258220	261900	If you want to see it drop live, then the rest are on YouTube.
261920	265960	It's like, don't try to get caught up trying to catch all the talks now.
266140	270340	Spend the time networking, hanging out, watching people and the craziness
270340	273640	that's going down through the hallways, the villages, the contest area,
273640	276340	the vendor area, the chill-out area.
276340	280820	Go and network and meet other like-minded hackers and try to figure out
280820	282340	what else is going on.
282340	284840	That's what you should be doing at DEFCON.
284840	289000	My best DEFCON tip for newcomers is to use the hacker tracker.
289020	292360	Here's a tip for everyone who's coming up asking for the bathroom.
292360	295600	It's that way, in case anyone's wondering.
295600	297340	Here's another one from Discord.
297340	301620	Wear comfortable shoes. There will be significant amounts of walking.
301620	303800	Here's another one coming from Twitter.
303800	305960	Be selfish with your time.
305960	309440	There's so much to do and there's such a fear of missing out.
309440	310060	Be selfish.
310060	315320	If you find yourself not enjoying the thing you're doing at any given time, get up.
315320	318740	Go find something because there's so much to do.
318740	322420	Pre-register for this. It was 20 minutes to go through the line.
322420	325280	I don't know how long it was for cash. Probably hours.
325440	330720	Best piece of advice that I can give you all out there is if you show up for cash at the door,
330720	333860	show up super early so that you get an actual badge.
333860	335380	Not one of these guys.
335720	339800	Show up early to pick up your badge if you're not registered.
339800	343240	If you have time, register early. That's huge.
343240	346100	The next thing is, this place can be overwhelming.
346140	349060	Definitely go in with some level of planning.
349120	351860	Some foresight. Some people you want to talk to.
351920	354240	Villages you want to visit. Stuff like that.
354600	357720	Try out the talks. See how you like them. If not, bail.
357720	359860	Go to the villages. Hang out with the people.
359860	361300	Here's another one from Discord.
361300	363260	Follow the 3-2-1 rule.
363260	369120	That's three hours of sleep a night, two meals, and at least one shower.
369120	371100	Lots of deodorant.
371420	373100	Furries are party animals.
373100	376800	The best solution is usually the easiest.
377020	380600	You don't have to attend everything. Don't let the lines bother you.
380600	385080	Have fun. Just go. Trust your gut.
385480	389600	It's a community. It's not like any other conference you'll ever be.
389600	392180	So just have fun. That's all I'm going to say.
392180	396600	My tip for newbies here is that if you get stuck, just talk to a goon.
396600	400420	The goons are the guys wearing red, like my new buddy here, Silk.
400560	401400	Is that your name, Silk?
401400	401800	Silk.
401800	402860	Okay, nice to meet you.
402860	403880	Nice to meet you as well.
403880	404380	Ah!
405000	405780	That was awkward.
405780	406960	There we go. Alright, cheers.
406960	407480	Nailed it.
407480	408180	Thanks.
408240	410360	Alright, so far this is my first DEF CON.
410360	412340	I would say my number one tip is just talk to people.
412340	417860	Everyone's really happy to say hi and talk to you about what they're into and join you on different talks.
417860	419560	So, yeah, don't be afraid to make friends.
419560	421580	Pack food. Vegas is expensive.
421880	423540	Bring snacks or something.
423540	427480	I brought 20 oatmeal cookies and that's my breakfast for the next three days.
427780	435500	Hello, stay hydrated and just in case if anybody wants to come and get hired, we have a job right here.
435560	436880	Airplane mode.
437000	441580	A piece of advice from someone off camera was only go to the talks.
441580	444760	Well, the talks are amazing and they're really good.
444940	446920	All of them go up online or most of them do.
446920	454600	The biggest benefit to going to some of the talks is the speaker comes off stage and you can ask him questions and get clarifications.
454700	459420	While the talks, again, are absolutely incredible, a lot of them go up online.
459420	470440	So instead of bumping into people trying to get in for a really popular talk, sometimes your best course of action is to catch it online and plan to talk to the person after they get off stage.
470440	471840	Great piece of advice.
471840	472800	Thank you.
472920	474920	I don't know why people are being dirty.
474920	477220	It says for DEF CON.
478140	479600	Somewhere in the middle there.
479600	481560	I can't see the camera when I do this.
481820	485560	Yeah, if it's your first time at DEF CON, you should absolutely try out the scavenger hunt.
485560	494140	It's a great way to go around, meet people, try new things, see interesting stuff, and expose yourself to a part of con that most people don't even realize exists.
494140	499480	A piece of advice off camera is don't go see the talks because they're all recorded and put online.
499480	506280	Go be social because that is one of the most important pieces of being in the community, interacting and hanging out with other people.
506280	508440	So go. Enjoy things.
508440	513860	And do it while doing scav hunt because that is a unifying experience.
513860	519740	Another piece of advice, go find someone who knows something you don't know and learn from them.
519740	524220	And then go find someone who you know something that they don't and share it with them.
524220	534300	Whether it's at the lockpicking village, whether it's at any number of villages, go teach, go learn, because that's really what the community is about, sharing information.
534300	535580	Beautiful thing.
536380	537840	Drink water.
538040	542660	Yeah, my DEF CON tip for newbies is on the first day, make sure you do start with rum.
543960	544600	That's it.
544600	547340	What do you drink after rum, though?
548420	549980	Another rum.
550320	551980	What about after rum?
551980	553340	Yeah, another rum.
553980	555660	What's after rum?
555660	556700	What's after rum?
556700	558220	No, I'm asking you.
558980	561480	Is there something after rum?
561640	563160	Is there?
564060	566620	What's your tip for DEF CON newbies?
567000	572980	PHP is outdated, but also be careful with how you create your applications.
573560	582620	I was actually at Black Hat and there was a vendor, there was actually a vendor who had a AR game posted.
583700	587600	And so they have like a leaderboard displayed on a screen and everything.
588300	592080	So I saw someone who got like a 300,000 score.
592080	593900	I was like, there's no way that they did that.
593900	604640	So I checked the source code and they were basically saving the score by making calls to a PHP endpoint with no authentication or anything whatsoever.
604880	611600	So I was able to just craft a link that said PHP is insecure and set my score to 69, 69, 69.
611620	616920	For the DEF CON newbies, I have to say, don't eat the yellow snow. It's not worth it.
616980	619080	Don't wait for lunchtime to get your lunch.
619140	622600	Hello. I'm a bit short for this. There you go.
622600	630500	Okay. The tip of the day. Reach out to CyberSec people from Australia and US for cyber security talent.
630500	636540	If you want to make sure you make a lot of friends at this event, make sure you got your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on for everyone.
636540	641000	My tip is only bring one laptop. Carrying multiple gets pretty heavy.
641000	647440	Same thing goes for cameras. One camera, two is too many. Three is definitely too many.
648040	651260	Here's a DEF CON tip. Don't fuck it up.
651260	660460	Please don't fuck it up, of course, but talk to people. Talk to your neighbors. Meet someone in line. Line con's a thing. You're in line. Talk. You have interests.
660460	663800	Maybe they'll teach you something. Maybe you'll learn something. Maybe you can teach them something.
663980	668640	It's awesome. I make the best friendships here doing just that. And bring stickers, too.
668720	672840	The talks are all online and recorded, so I highly recommend go to a lot of the villages.
672900	676520	Don't forget to network at DEF CON. We learn from each other. Keep doing it.
676520	680420	Your first year is always going to be overwhelming. It's okay.
680920	683220	What's your best tip for DEF CON?
683460	690880	My best tip is keep it weird. DEF CON is a unique place. It's unique for you. It's unique for everybody here. So keep it weird. That's what it needs to be.
691160	692880	What's your best tip for DEF CON?
693020	698900	Hey, there's a whole bunch of shit here that you probably don't know about. Learn something that you don't know yet.
698900	700640	Gator, what's your DEF CON tip?
700640	706440	Go play the contest. Whether it's Darknet, Scavenger Hunt, there's a whole bunch of different ones out there. Go play with it.
706580	708180	Cannibal, what's your tip for DEF CON?
708180	714500	Tip for DEF CON? Talk to people. Meet people, be weird, and you will attract the people that you want to hang out with.
715020	721220	As I get back to the hotel room, I realize there's so many other tips, and I didn't really get to give a lot of mine.
721220	733280	So while I think hydrating is a good thing, and good shoes, and all of that, I think here would be the top piece of advice I would give to a new person who's never been to DEF CON, and even some of the old ones.
733280	743300	First and foremost, I think that is a good tip, to be selfish with your time. And I don't mean that to be like, be selfish, but there's so much to see, and you're not going to see it all.
743300	754480	So this kind of like, there's a little yin and yang to this one. The first one is be selfish with your time. If you're finding yourself not having fun with something, stop doing it, and go find something you are having fun with.
754480	770240	On the other side of things, if you are having fun, don't feel like you have to leave that thing to go find something new, because even like last year, 49 videos, plus like 10 other ones which we didn't even release, and we didn't even see everything.
770440	781420	You could stay in Blue Team Village, and if you're having fun there, you can never leave, and there's talk after talk after talk after talk. If you're having fun, continue doing it. If you're not having fun, go find something else.
781420	797380	Two, if you're having fun, or you're looking for some way to have fun, go check out the contest area. This is my favorite area to hang out. Like, vendors is fun, speaking, talking is fun, the villages are fun, but for me, it's all about the contests.
797380	813040	And the three I'm going to mention are Darknet, because it's a great place to learn, especially if you're in that education mindset where you want to go learn. There's fun things to be had there too, but it's just an approachable contest. You can go, you can do a little bit of it, and you can walk away.
813040	837540	Another one, you have to do a little bit of, like, legwork if you want to compete, but it's just a fun one to watch, which is Hack Fortress. One of my favorites to play, but also just watch because you have gamers, and you have hackers who are solving things, and most of their physical challenges, the team that runs it is great getting on the megaphone, and I think there was someone dancing with roller skates last year, and maybe they're going to do it again this year.
837540	866980	But the piece de resistance, the thing which I absolutely love at DEF CON is Scav Hunt. So I have a challenge. I'm ending this video with a tip, which is my challenge to you. If you are at DEF CON this year, or you ever come, go to the Scav Hunt table. It's fun to watch, but here's my challenge. Get a list. Find one item. There's like 200 items on the list. Find one item.
867540	885400	And turn it in. And you will have so much fun. And you have a story to tell. I guarantee it. And if it doesn't make you meet other people, then I think the whole contest is like, it's the whole goal of this conference. It's where you will find the most fun.
885400	903340	And here's the thing. This entire conference is about meeting people. It's not about the technical stuff. And it's great. And it's great hearing about the new exploits and all of that. But you can find exploit information online. You can find talking information online. And that's why people say the talks are recorded.
903340	926280	What you cannot find anywhere else is the people in the community to connect with at this conference. Because that is what it is all about. And you're looking for your tribe. And while people go, oh, DEF CON's gotten too big. And you'll see this in the Jason Street conversation I have, and which will be coming up, is DEF CON has gotten big.
926280	955240	And that's what's so cool about it. Because you can find your tribe through a ton of different places. You can find it in shared interests. You can find it in other places of the community. But you can find people you connect with and you tribe with and you share a passion with. So that's it. Go find, right now, go find a single item on the scav hunt list. And you, I guarantee it, will have a blast.
955240	960200	Thanks for watching the tips. And, as always, HACK ON!
